There are 2 definitions of Appreciation:
1. Recognition of the quality, value, significance, or magnitude of people and things.
2. A rise in value or price, especially over time.
Join us in worship, study, service and fellowship opportunities during a year in which we seek to grow in faith - and appreciate - in both senses of the word. This year we will focus on and continue to develop our core gifts as a congregation of radical hospitality and authentic community.
We are grateful and we are growing! We grow as we spend time with God’s holy word in personal devotions. There will be weekly readings, quotations, questions for reflection and suggested verses for memorization and meditation posted on the bulletin board, sent out by facebook and on our website. Take time weekly - if not daily - to prepare yourself for Sunday worship.

A Year of Appreciation Film Night
Tuesday, January 31st at 7:00pm
Join us to watch the PBS Documentary
"Flag Wars"
Shot over a four-year period, Linda Goode Bryant and Laura Poitras’ Flag Wars is a poignant and very personal look at a community in Columbus, Ohio, undergoing gentrification. What happens when gay white homebuyers move into a working-class black neighborhood? As the new residents restore the beautiful but run-down homes, black homeowners must fight to hold onto their community and heritage. The inevitable clashes expose prejudice and self-interest on both sides, as well as the common dream to have a home to call your own. Winner of the Jury Award at the South by Southwest Film Festival, Flag Wars is a candid, unvarnished portrait of privilege, poverty and local politics taking place across America. This will be followed by a discussion about changing neighborhoods.
At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us. ~Albert Schweitzer
Dear Friends,
2012 is "A Year of Appreciation" at Karl Road Christian Church. Appreciation is a recognition of the significance of people and things and it also means a rise in value or price. Appreciation means both gratitude and growth.
As we look to the coming year, my hope is that we focus on both of these meanings. In our newsletter this year we want to appreciate the many ministries here at our church and so we begin an "Appreciation Corner" this month and lift up to you the blessings of our signing choir.
We also want to encourage a "culture of appreciation" as we come together on Sunday mornings. We have "mailboxes" for everyone in the narthex. We are providing "I Appreciate You" cards in the pews so that you might drop a note to someone who has "lighted the flame" within us.
Finally, we want to continue to be a church that presents opportunities for growth - (appreciation) in our faith. We will continue to provide daily devotionals on the bulletin board (and on our Facebook page), Bible studies, small groups, and opportunities for service. This month we will have a "Listening Workshop" January 14th to enrich our relationships and kindle our spiritual life.
God has blessed us with each other and I look forward to our ministry together in 2012. May we grow in our appreciation of our brothers and sisters and appreciate in value ourselves.
See you in worship,
Margot

As part of our Year of Appreciation, we are going to highlight different areas of ministry of Karl Road Christian Church.
This month we learn about: THE SIGNING CHOIR
In the early ‘50s the opportunity to learn some basic signing came into my life. As a charter member of this congregation, it was a pleasure to work with Louise Wright who was the librarian at the Ohio School for the Deaf. Our children often signed to each other during church services. Louise and I taught Sunday School and shared signing with the children one summer in particular.
It was possible for me to study ASL interpreting with a Luthern pastor to the deaf and a professor who has a doctorate and is now teaching in California. Interpreting church services, in part both here and at Fourth Avenue L.C., in the children’s musicals in Indiana and in some of our local nursing homes has been the way my ASL has been made available to the community.
Here at Karl Road we started a small signing choir shich now consists of Nancy McVay, Jan Howson, Carol Fry--when she’s available--and myself. Nancy has two cousins who are deaf and has been teaching her grandchildren to sign some basic signs.
We love signing hymns of the church and do so periodically in worship. There’s room for more to join us. We usually practice twice a month after 10:30am worship and welcome new members of all ages.

Your NEW offering envelopes will be in your mail folders with your new offering number. This year they are PINK! The first envelope is the Initial Offering. This envelope is to receive your contribution toward the cost of the new envelopes (with discounts, approximately $3 per box this year). Thanks, in advance, for helping defray this expense.
Gerrie Miller, Financial Secretary
We are beginning plans for social events for the coming year. If you are interested in serving on this Team, please contact Jeri Hiestand or Gerrie Miller.
One of the events we would like to sponsor is a CPR class. Please let us know if you would be interested in attending and what day and time would be most convenient. February is Heart Health month, so we would like to have it early in February. It is usually a 3-4 hour session to complete certification.
This team makes arrangements for Coffee Hour host/esses. There is a sign-up sheet and instructions for hosting on the bulletin board outside the church office. Your help is needed to provide this important fellowship time to our worshipers each Sunday.
Also, let us know what other Membership/Fellowship events you would be interested in having this Team plan.
JULIETs - 9:15am Thursdays (Just Us Ladies Interested in Eating Too) For more information on JULIETs, call June Nirote , 614-523-0733.

Bible Study - Wednesdays @ 7pm - We will continue to meet in room 110 for a discussion of two scriptures every week - one of which will be the subject of the sermon on Sunday. This is a way to continue to learn about the Bible, be part of a very loving small group and prepare yourself for worship on Sunday. Everyone is welcome!Bibles to Bibles - January 5 @ Anshultz’ and January 19 at KRCC. Bible study for the college and career group. For further info email Seth Stout: sethdavidstout@yahoo.com
OUR MISSIONARY PARTNER
We are entering into a missionary relationship with Elena Huegele, who serves in Chile. This will be done by email correspondence.
Once a quarter, she will share with us what type of work she is doing and where.
Elena is working in the US at present, sharing her stories with congregations as she did for us in September. After March 5, 2012, she will be based in Talca, Chile.
What would you like to know about her work in Chile or where she has visited churches in the US? Contact Bonnie J. Furr at church or by phone at 614-478-7856 with your questions. This exciting experience will enable us to gain a sense of participation in God’s mission in the world.

a Very Generous Congregation:
The children and youth in care at the Cleveland Christian Home received in excess of $2,700 in gifts from you this year. We also delivered approximately $1,275 from our sister church, Fourth Ave. Christian.
You provided Christmas gifts to 18 special children in this congregation and one youth in our Foundations program through the Angel Tree.
The mittens, hats, and scarves will go to the clothing room at the New Life Methodist Church. This church works closely with the NNEMAP Food Pantry.
The scarves were made by Marsha Mueller’s group at the Marion Correctional Facility.
The aluminum cans donated thus far have netted $94.16 toward my Lexington week in June. Information will come in mid-January as to what classes will be offered. Thank you for your continuing support.

The Evangelism Team would like to thank the Karl Road Christian Church for helping us to collect and distribute over 300 rolls of wrapping paper!
We were able to hand these out, along with information on our church, at three locations: here to our Brothers and Sisters who attend Alcoholics Anonymous at our church, the YMCA, and the Kroger Grocery Store at Morse and Karl Roads.
We look forward to doing more outreach projects in 2012 as we seek to expand the Kingdom and let folk know about our great church!
